Without a Guide
Should you visit Solheimajokull Glacier without a guide? That depends on what you plan to do at the glacier!
If you plan to stop at Solheimajokull Glacier for a sightseeing stop on a South Coast tour, you can definitely visit the glacier independently.
It’s an easy walk from the Solheimajokull Glacier parking lot to the Solheimajokull viewpoint, from where you can admire the glacier and snap photos.
You can also walk on your own to the edge of Solheimajokull Glacier. There is a maintained path that leads to the edge, and although it’s a longer walk than to the viewpoint, it’s perfectly doable for most visitors.
Stay on the rock or dirt and admire the beautiful grey-streaked glacier and snap photos. You can even bend down and touch the ice if you like!
But if you want to participate in activities on the glacier: hiking, ice climbing, exploring ice caves and the like, you should join a guided tour in order to safely enjoy these activities.

While hiking Solheimajokull Glacier without a guide is not prohibited, it is prudent to have a guide lead you on safe paths over the glacier to minimize the potential for accidents.
Tour outfitters have guides that are familiar with the terrain and not only bring along safety equipment but also show you how and when to use it.
